Boots get the blame first. Sometimes they deserve it. Very often the problem is four hours of standing still on a surface that does not move.

Standing still is harder than walking
This surprises people, and it is the key to the whole thing. When you walk, your calves contract and relax rhythmically, and that pumping action moves blood back up out of your legs. Stand still and the pump stops. Blood pools, the load on your feet stays in exactly the same place, and the small stabilising muscles around your ankles and hips hold one posture for minutes at a time.
That is why a day at a bench can hurt more than a day on your feet moving about, and why the ache is in your lower back and calves rather than only in your soles.
A compliant surface does not remove the standing. What it does is make standing still slightly unstable, so you make continuous small adjustments without noticing. The pump keeps working. That is the mechanism, and it is the whole of the honest argument for matting.
Fix these first, in this order
- Bench height. If you are stooping, no floor covering will save your lower back. Elbow height for light work, a little below for anything you lean on.
- Boots. If yours are more than a couple of years old and you are on a hard floor daily, the midsole is done. This is the cheapest real fix available and it should be tried before anything else.
- Whether you have to stand at all. A tall stool at a bench for the parts of the job that do not need force changes more than any product does.
- The floor. Once the three above are right and the ache is still there, the surface you are standing on is what is left.
Where the ache tells you something
Soles and heels burning by mid-afternoon is the classic hard-floor pattern, and it is the one most responsive to what is under your feet.
Calves tight and heavy suggests the pumping problem above. Same cause, same answer.
Lower back is more ambiguous. It can be standing still, and it can just as easily be bench height, reaching, or lifting. If your back hurts and your feet do not, look at the bench before you look at the floor.
Knees usually mean kneeling, squatting or stairs rather than standing. HSE list those separately for good reason.
What thickness actually changes
Compliance is what does the work, and you get compliance from thickness. A 12mm mat compresses and reaches the floor. A 25mm deck has room to deflect and return under an adult in boots, which is what keeps the micro-movement going.
This is worth knowing before you compare prices, because almost everything on sale in the UK as interlocking anti-fatigue matting is 12mm, 16mm or 19mm. When one product costs half what another does, thickness is very often the reason and it is rarely stated as prominently as the price.
If you are going to test one thing before you spend money, test this. Stand on a piece of 25mm and a piece of 12mm one after the other. It takes ten seconds and it settles the argument better than any page can.
What matting will not do
- It will not fix a bench at the wrong height.
- It will not fix worn-out boots. If anything it makes the boots more noticeable, because it removes the other variable.
- It will not turn eight hours of standing into a comfortable eight hours. It makes it a less punishing eight hours.
- It is not treatment. If something hurts in a way that is not simply tiredness, that is a doctor's job and not a matting supplier's.
Questions people ask
- Are anti-fatigue mats a gimmick?
- The mechanism is real and it is straightforward: a compliant surface keeps you making small postural adjustments instead of locking out, which keeps the calf pump working. What is a gimmick is the marketing around it, particularly the absence-reduction percentages that circulate in this trade. We do not use those figures.
- Do I need matting if I have good boots?
- Possibly not. Good boots and a floor you only stand on for an hour or two at a time is a fine answer, and it is cheaper. The case for a deck gets stronger the longer you stand in one spot.
- How thick should it be?
- For a work position where somebody stands for hours, thicker is better and 25mm is a meaningfully different experience from the 12 to 19mm that most UK matting is sold at. For a floor you mostly walk across, thickness matters much less and you should not pay for it.
- Is standing on concrete worse than other floors?
- Yes, on the compliance question. Concrete has essentially no give. Timber over joists has a little. Neither has much, which is why what you put on top of it matters more than which one you have.
