A cold concrete garage floor, and what to do about the bit you stand on
A garage floor is a slab on the ground. In February it sits at the temperature of the ground, and you are standing on it in boots for four hours.

What the floor is actually doing to you
Two separate things, and they get muddled together because they happen at the same bench on the same evening.
The first is heat. A concrete slab is in direct contact with the ground and it has enormous thermal mass. It will sit near ground temperature all winter no matter what you do to the air above it, and it conducts heat out of your feet far faster than a timber or a covered floor would. Heating the garage does not fix this. You can run a heater for two hours, get the air to a pleasant temperature, and the slab will still be cold, because you have not heated several tonnes of concrete.
The second is that concrete does not deflect. Every step you take, all of the energy goes into you rather than into the floor. Standing still is worse than walking, because the same small area of foot carries the same load for minutes at a time with nothing moving.
You feel both as the same thing: your feet ache and you go inside earlier than you meant to.
Why heating the garage does not solve it
Most people try heat first, because cold is the sensation and heat is the obvious answer. It helps your hands and it helps the air, and it does very little for your feet.
The reason is that heat loss through the soles of your boots into a slab is conduction, and conduction depends on the temperature of the thing you are touching, not the air around it. Warm air over a cold slab still leaves you standing on a cold slab.
Putting 25mm of rubber between your boot and the concrete breaks that conduction path. It is not insulation in any technical sense and we are not going to pretend it has an R value worth quoting, but it is a low conductivity layer with air in it, and standing on it feels completely different to standing on the slab.
Why not just mat the whole floor
Because it costs several times more and it does very little extra. Garage floor tiles are a different product sold for a different reason: they cover an area, they look tidy, they resist oil drips, and they are 5 to 8mm thick. They are not built to stand on for four hours.
You stand in a surprisingly small patch. Most people at a bench occupy a step either side and that is it. Covering the parts of the floor you drive over, park on and walk across contributes nothing to how your feet feel.
The sensible answer for a home workshop is a deck at the bench, and bare slab everywhere else.
What the alternatives actually cost
Worth doing honestly, because plenty of people fix this for very little and never need to read a page like this.
- A pair of boots with a proper midsole. £80 to £150, and it is the first thing to try if your boots are old. It works, and it is the cheapest answer available. It also walks out of the garage with you.
- A rubber mat from a builders merchant. £25 to £60. Usually 8 to 12mm, usually smaller than the space you actually use, and it will creep across a smooth floor while you work. It is better than nothing.
- Interlocking tiles bought loose. Cheaper than a kit before you add the edging, and then you work out the quantity yourself, buy the edging separately, and accept that most of what is on sale is 12 to 19mm. Price a finished position rather than a single tile and the gap narrows a long way.
- A workstation kit. A 25mm deck sized to the position with bevelled edging on every open edge and delivery in the price. More expensive, and the argument for it is thickness, the edging and not having to do the arithmetic.
If you are going to buy a deck, buy it once
Two things separate something you will still be standing on in ten years from something you will replace next winter.
Thickness, because thickness is what does the work. Most interlocking matting sold in the UK is 12mm, 16mm or 19mm. There is a real difference between that and 25mm, which is why the dimension should be checked before you compare prices.
Edges, because an unbevelled edge on a garage floor is a trip hazard and it is also the thing that lifts first. An edge that is bevelled and closed stays put and you stop noticing it.
Questions people ask
- Will matting stop the garage being cold?
- No. It stops the floor pulling heat out of your feet, which is most of what you actually feel, but the air will be exactly as cold as it was. If you want a warm garage you need insulation and heat. If you want to stand at the bench for four hours in January, you want something between your boots and the slab.
- Is it worth it if I only use the garage at weekends?
- Honestly, that depends on how long a session is. Two hours occasionally and a decent pair of boots will probably do you. Four hours on a Saturday and a Sunday, every week, is the same standing load as a working day and it accumulates the same way.
- Will it move about on a smooth power-floated floor?
- A kit will not. It weighs 15 to 41 kg depending on size, and that is enough to stay put without adhesive. A single lightweight mat will creep, which is the most common complaint about the cheap answer.
- Can I park on it?
- No. This is a standing deck for a work position, not a garage floor tile. If you want to drive on it you want a different product and we do not sell it.
