ESD floor matting and ESD bench matting are not the same product
Both are black, both are ESD rated, both come from the same suppliers. They do different jobs and buying the wrong one is a wasted few hundred pounds.

Why the confusion happens
Because both are sold as ESD matting, both are black rubber, and both are bought by the same person for the same underlying reason. If you ring a matting supplier and say you need ESD matting, a good one asks whether you mean the floor or the bench. Plenty do not.

What a floor deck does that a bench mat cannot
Charge at a work position mostly comes from movement. A person shifting weight, turning, or walking to a rack and back generates charge through contact and separation with the floor. If the floor is insulating, that charge sits on the person until they touch something that will take it, and quite often that is the assembly.
A conductive floor deck gives it somewhere to go continuously. A bench mat cannot do that job, because the person is not standing on the bench.
What a bench mat does that a floor deck cannot
It gives the work itself a controlled surface to sit on. Boards, sub-assemblies and tools resting on a dissipative bench surface are at a known potential. A floor deck does nothing for what is on the bench.
Sites with a properly specified EPA usually run both, and they are specified separately with separate paths to earth.
And neither of them is insulating matting
This is the important one. Both ESD products are designed to conduct. Electrical insulating matting to BS EN 61111 is designed to resist current and is used in front of live switchgear. If your position is about protecting a person from an electrical source rather than protecting components from static, neither product on this page is what you want.
Questions people ask
- Can I use bench matting on the floor?
- No. A 2 to 3mm sheet under boots on a concrete floor will tear, curl and become a trip hazard, and it does nothing for the standing. It is not built for foot traffic.
- Can I use floor matting on a bench?
- You could physically put a 25mm deck on a bench, and you would lose 25mm of working height and gain nothing. It is not what it is for.
- Do I need both?
- If you have a properly specified EPA and operators stand at the positions, usually yes. If operators are seated and wrist strapped, the bench surface is doing most of the work and the floor matters less.
