Drainage grid or solid top

One decision, decided entirely by whether your floor is wet in normal operation. Not whether it gets mopped once a week.

The one question that decides it

Is there liquid on the floor while somebody is standing there? Not whether the floor gets cleaned. Whether it is wet during the work.

If yes, grid. A solid deck on a wet floor raises the water to the surface you stand on and traps the rest underneath, which is the worst of both.

If no, solid. A grid on a dry floor gives you nothing, and it will swallow every washer you drop.

The dropped parts problem

This is the honest cost of drainage and it is worth thinking about properly before you order. If your work involves small fasteners, components or tooling that gets dropped, a grid will take them.

On a production floor that is often acceptable and sometimes preferable, because it means nothing is trapped between a mat and a wet floor. In a workshop where you drop taps and drill bits, it is a nuisance you will notice on day one.

What a grid does not fix

The floor around it. A drainage deck is a control at a position, not a treatment for a wet floor. Anyone walking across the wet area away from the deck is on the same floor they were on before.

It also does not stop the surface being slippery if there is oil or detergent in the water. That needs a gritted grid, which is a specific kit rather than a compromise.

Questions people ask

Can I use a solid mat in a wet area if I mop it?
You can, and people do, and it is the wrong answer. Water on a solid surface is a slip risk while somebody is standing on it, and moisture trapped underneath is a hygiene problem you cannot see.
Does a drainage grid feel odd underfoot?
In work boots, no. In soft-soled shoes you notice the pattern. If that matters at your position, contact us before ordering and we will help you choose the surface honestly.
Is a grid harder to clean?
Different rather than harder. You lift it and hose the deck and the floor together, which is a normal part of a washdown routine and takes less effort than trying to clean under a solid mat.
